Year 5 - Beret 2025/26

Welcome to Year 5 - Beret Class!

We hope that you've all had a relaxing summer and are ready to start a brand new school year. We have so many exciting things to look forward to this year and can't wait to get stuck in. You'll find some useful information here to help get a grip with routines. If you need any help or support, please get in touch.

Class teachers: Mr Hall (Monday and Tuesday) and Mrs Hall (Wednesday-Friday).

Teaching assistant: Mrs Brampton.

PE

Our PE days are Tuesday and Friday every week. Tuesday PE will be in the hall but due to restricted space and lots of year groups, Friday's PE lessons will be outside (providing the weather is OK). A reminder of our PE kit: Black shorts or joggers, trainers, coloured t-shirt linked to their house group and a hoodie (preferably a green Outwoods hoodie) with hair tied back and earrings either removed or taped up.

House colours:

Red - ash

Blue - oak

Green - birch

Lime - yellow

Forest Schools

We are incredibly lucky to be able to do forest schools every week and it is something that is always really enjoyed. Year 5 have forest schools after assembly every Wednesday so the children can come to school in their forest schools kit to save time getting changed. After October half term, they will do forest schools after break so will need to come with their kit in a separate bag to get changed into later on in the morning. As the children head outside regardless of the weather, we ask that you please send your child in with a complete change of clothes, including boots or wellies, that they are able to get muddy and potentially ripped. This allows the children to partake fully in the fun activities without then having to spend the rest of the day freezing cold and soaking wet. As the weather gets colder, hats and gloves along with waterproofs will help protect the children.

Homework

Homework will be set every Friday to be handed in on the following Wednesday. It will consist of maths, which will be a continuation of what they have learnt at school that week, and English grammar. Dojo points will be given out to those who complete it and hand it in on time. If your child is really struggle, please don't battle alone; let us know and we'll do what we can to support.

The spelling sheets have already gone out for the first half term for your child to practise, ready for the spelling test on a Friday. We ask you to please encourage them to learn these words, in whatever way suits them best.

Reading - although by Year 5 children can generally read fairly fluently, we ask that you encourage your child to read a range of various genres and non-fiction to expand their knowledge and vocabulary. We are working really hard on comprehension this year, discussing summarising the text, what effect vocabulary has, what the words mean and looking at inference. This ensures that the children really understand what they are reading. Asking them questions about a text will help them improve these skills.

Set on 26/09:

Maths p12 & 13

Grammar p29

Set on 03/10/25:

Maths p15 & 16

Grammar p4

Maths

Up until Christmas, our focus is on place value and calculating across the four operations. If you'd like to support your child at home, taking some time to practise times tables and consolidating their understanding of the four operations would really give them a good level of understanding across most areas of the maths curriculum.

English

Up until October half term, the children will be using Treason by Berlie Doherty to shape our writing. We will be learning to write a 1st person recount in the role of the main character William, or his father and writing an adventure story as William tries to save his father who has been locked up for committing treason. Our big focus will be on vocabulary and how to enhance our writing by selecting creative but meaningful language.

Topic

Our topic for the first half term is the Tudors. We are learning all about the Tudor period and what influences they had and how they shaped history. Our trip to Bosworth Battlefield will aid our understanding of the beginning of the Tudor reign.
