Year 4 - Flat Cap 2024/25

Welcome to Flat caps! Our class teacher is Mrs Bird and our teaching assistant is Mrs Downes (Tue - Fri) and Mrs Deakin (Mon-Wed). We are very excited to begin an excellent new academic year filled with exciting and memorable learning experiences. Please refer to this website page which will include information on PE and forest school days, homework, spellings. 

 

English

This half-term the children will be reading The Wolf's Story. We will focus on :

  • How to write a news reports
  • Fronted adverbials
  • Subordinating conjunctions 

 

Maths

To start each year, every class focuses on place value as a solid foundation for the rest of their learning. In Year 4, the children will be introduced to THTO, addition and subtraction of four digit numbers with exchanges. Rounding numbers to the nearest 10,100 or 1000. They will also be part of a mastery in number to develop their understanding of product, factors,doubles, halves and multiplication. 

 

Science

The children will be learning about forces and magnets this half-term which they will explore through scientific enquiry and investigation. They will plan and conduct fair tests and identify what to keep the same and what to change and measure.

 

Forest School and PE 

PE is on Tuesday and Thursday. Please send children in house shirt, black joggers or leggings and appropriate footwear. Forest School is every other Tuesday mornings.

 

Topic

Revolution - We will learn about the Industrial Revolution during the Victorian era. We will learn about Queen Victorian and the impact of the railway to British life and industry.

 

Spellings

Spellings sheets will be given to children in the coming weeks of the half-term. Please ensure children practice these as they will be tested on them every Friday.

 

Homework

Homework books (Maths or English) will be given to the children every Friday, please ensure that they complete the sheet given in their maths book or the page number indicated on the opening page of their English book. Homework is due Wednesday to give us time to mark and hand it back.  

 

TT rockstars log-ins are provided on the opening page of their maths book. Children are to also practice times tables in addition. 

 

Autumn II- Ice Palace

English

This half-term the children will be reading The Ice Palace We will focus on :

  • Describing character
  • Writing an adventure story
  • Persuasion 

We have been learning about using subordinate conjunctions to add more detail to our sentences.

Maths

This half terms focus will be on multiplication and division facts

 

Science 

The children will learn about grouping and classifying animals and their habitats

 

Recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways

Explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their local and wider environment

Recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers and have an impact on living things

Identify differences, similarities or changes related to simple scientific ideas and processes

Report on findings including oral and written explanations, displays or presentations of results and conclusions

Please note - all children will learn ten new words (see the last two words from week 1-5) these words are part of our whole class vocabulary development.

 

Induction Day - 4th November

Today we learned about the countries which made up the Arctic circle and why they meet the criteria of being 'Arctic countries'. We learned about the northern lights and which gases cause the colours of the lights. We also discovered that the Vikings believed they were the flames from dragons mouths.

 

We found out some facts about life in Norway- we listened to some folk music and located the country using Google Earth.

Spring 2025

Welcome back to Year Four, where your teachers are Mrs Bloomer and Mrs Bird. We are also supported by an additional teacher, Mrs Nucci, and our teaching assistants are Mrs Peacock, Mrs Deakin, Mrs Bragg and Mrs Smith.

 

This term, we go swimming on a Tuesday morning and our PE day is a Thursday. Children need to come to school in their PE kit on Tuesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, please also bring in your swimming costume and a towel. 

 

Please remember that our PE kit is a house colour or white t-shirt and black shorts/joggers with trainers. For the colder months, we have a bottle green hoodie with school logo or the children can wear their usual jumper. Children need to come to school in their full PE kit on our PE day. Jewellery should not be worn, and please make sure that ear-rings are removed on PE and swimming days.

 

Spring Two

This half term, our topic work will centre around The Titanic, and we have another great book we can't wait to share with you. We hope you have found time to create your own Titanic to add to our classroom display. I have attached a copy of the letter below.

Don't forget to work hard on learning your times tables, ready for the Multiplication Tables Check in June. Play TT Rock Stars each day (58% of you have played this past week), and enjoy playing the card games we have taught you with your family.

 

In English, we have continued to learn about using subordinating conjunctions to tell me more about an idea.

Spring One

During this half term (Spring 1),  we will be learning about the Romans.  For English, we will be reading narratives related to traditional tales,  to help us develop our writing and reading skills. In maths, we will be learning about multiplication and division.  We will also be working really hard learning our times tables in time for the national test in June- please keep playing TT Rock Stars!

 

Titanic Project

The Romans

During our induction day we discovered some facts about the Romans. We learned that they prayed to many gods, loved the arts and that the Roman Empire spread across Europe, Asia and North Africa.
