Year 2 Spring I newsletter
Spring I 2022
Welcome to the new year - 2022!
This half term our topic is 'A Winter's Tale.' In this unit we will be finding out about the seasons, in particular the weather in winter and hibernation of British animals. We will also we finding out about polar regions and using maps and globes to locate these places. We have two lovely books to study that we know the children will really enjoy. Something new to Outwoods that we are starting this term is orienteering, which is a fabulous way to enjoy active learning. Remember to wear PE kit into school on Mondays and Friday - ready to get fit and healthy!
Autumn 2021
On our topic launch day, we came dressed as people who lived in a castle. We enjoyed lots of activities, including a royal banquet, building a castle, calligraphy and courtly dancing.
There were a great range of costumes from knights and maids to Princess Charlotte! Special mention to Theo who came dressed as a Coldstream Guard in memory of his grandad who used to guard the queen at Windsor Castle. In this week of Remembrance, it was lovely to share this in class.
Well done Year 2, we had a great day!
What an exciting week Year Two had, learning all about The Great Fire of London! On Thursday, a local fire crew brought in a fire engine for us to look at, then on Friday, we were very lucky when one of our parents brought in his fire safety equipment and PPE to talk about life as a firefighter, and how to keep ourselves safe on bonfire night. We were all asked to check the batteries on our smoke alarms when we got home - have you checked yours yet?
As part of our topic on The Great Fire of London, Year Two walked into Atherstone to visit the bakery. On the way, we noticed that many of our local buildings are similar to seventeenth century buildings. We saw timber beams, houses where upstairs jutted out over the road, lots of windows with small panes of glass, alleyways and cobblestones.
Back in school, we also baked our own bread and had a tour of the modern school kitchen - there is no danger of a stray spark igniting a spark there!
We had a lovely time and really enjoyed our freshly baked bread rolls.
This week Top Hats have been busy working on a piece of Christmas artwork. Here are some pictures of it being created, you can see the finished picture on Dickens Night when it will be displayed in St Mary's Church along with work from every other class in school - how fantastic! So proud of their efforts this week.
The children worked hard on creating fantastic portraits in the style of Pablo Picasso. They really enjoyed finding out about his style of drawing and we think their pictures are fantastic! (They look great with the Halloween costumes!)
Race for Life - Sept 2021
Top Hat Class are really enjoying their new book - Traction Man. They have been using their imaginations to make up their own adventures in the classroom and outside on the playground. They had lots of great ideas and enjoyed doing 'voice overs' to describe what the characters were doing.
