Year One Staff

Mrs Colclough will also be working in year one on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

 

PE

Our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please send your child into school wearing their PE kit on these days.

 

Toast

Toast is available to buy daily at a cost of £1 per week. Please send your child’s money into school in a named envelope.

 

Autumn One Topic – Off We Go!

Our topic for this half term is entitled Off We Go! We will be learning all about transport and maps as well as finding out more about our local area, including Atherstone and nearby towns and cities. We are starting the term by reading the story of the Jolly Postman. The children will be reading the story and completing lots of activities about the book. In Maths we will be focusing on the place value of numbers up to and beyond 20. We will be learning how to represent these numbers in different ways and how to compare and order them. We will teach the children how to solve problems involving the place value. In Science, we will be learning about different seasons and how the weather changes throughout the seasons of Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer. We will also be conducting weather experiments to find out more about the wind and the rainfall during Autumn.

Reading Update

The children are really enjoying taking part in our new Little Wandle reading groups at school and they now have their own personal logins to access their school reading books electronically at home. We hope you all enjoy sharing and discussing the texts they have been reading and learning about in depth at school. In addition to this, the children are given a school reading book (selected by the class teacher) and a home shared reading book (that they choose themselves.)These will both be in their named reading folder. It is really important that the children bring their reading folder into school EVERY day so they can be read with individually and so that staff can change their books each week. We hope you are all enjoying reading and sharing lots of books together at home and please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the year one team if you have any questions about, or need any support with reading at home or school.

 

Autumn Two Topic - Who is Daisy?

 

Our new topic for this half term is entitled 'Who is Daisy?' We will be reading a wonderful story called Daisy Saves the Day and doing lots of history work comparing homes and other items from the present and past. In Maths we will be working on addition, subtraction, number bonds and number fact families. In Science we are continuing to look at seasonal weather changes.

 

Homework

 

We know the children have been very busy reading and practising their phonics at home - well Done! From Friday 11th November the children will also be getting maths homework sent home in their folders. We will send maths homework out on a Friday so please return completed homework sheets to school every Friday.

Spring Term One Topic - Searching For Wild Things

This half term we will be learning all about wild animals and other exciting creatures including dinosaurs. We will be reading a story called The Lonely Beast In English and in Science we will be learning to name and classify a range of different animals. In History we will be learning about dinosaurs and finding our more about when and where they lived. In Maths we will be deepening our knowledge of the place value of numbers up to 20.

 

Spelling Books

This half term the children will be receiving a spelling book with spellings to practise at home every week. We will be testing the children each week on the spellings set. Please ensure your child brings their spelling book into school everyday in their reading folder.

 

Spring Term Two Topic - Out Of This World!

This half term we are going on a journey into space - starting with a exciting educational visit to the National Space Centre. We will be doing lots of writing about space in English and we will be reading a variety of non - fiction books to find out a range of facts about Space. In Maths we will be continuing to work on addition and subtraction within 20. In Science we will be learning about the human body including the five senses.

Summer One Topic - Only We Can Save The World!

This half term we are reading a book called 10 Things I can Do To Help My World. We will be doing lots of learning about conservation, recycling and helping our planet in English and other subjects. In Geography we will be developing our fieldwork skills outside in the school grounds and in Science we will be learning all about different materials and their properties. In Maths we will be learning about multiplication and division as well as measuring in different ways. We will be working especially hard on our phonics skills ready for the year one phonics screening check next half term - practising reading lots of funny alien words!

Summer Two Topic - Brilliant Birds!

This half term we will learning all about birds! We will be reading a beautiful story called Hummingbird in English and in Science we will be learning all about the physical structures of birds and animals. We will also be learning about plants and flowers in our Science lessons too. We have an exciting visit from the Falconry Centre to look forward to this half term and we are excited about doing lots of bird watching in the school grounds.  In Maths we will be learning how to give directions and we will continue learning and developing our skills and understanding with addition and subtraction, multiplication and fractions. In Geography, we will be using atlases and other sources to find out more about different countries and continents of the world! What an exciting last half term in year one we have to look forward to!
