Year 1 - Sombrero 2025/26

Welcome to the Sombrero Class

This year our class teachers are Mrs Crutchley and Mrs Deeming.

Weekly Dates for the diary

PE

Our main PE day is Thursday, where we invite children to come to school in their PE kits.

Our PE kit is a T-shirt in their house colour (or white), black shorts or joggers and pumps or trainers.  Children can wear their school jumper or hoody too.

Forest School

Our Forest School day is a Thursday.

For forest school can all children bring with them a pair of wellington boots and a warm waterproof coat that they can change into and a spare pair of clothes (which may get dirty) which fully cover each child's arms and legs.

 Spellings

Everyone has been given their spelling words for the remainder of this half term. These can be found in Homework books.

Can you please practice these regularly at home, ready for a test on Thursday morning.

Homework

Homework is given out each Friday and needs to be returned the following Thursday.

Homework tasks are not time intensive and are intended to be a short activity which can be done together at home to help embed the learning from the classroom.  Furthermore, they help us identify when your child may need to repeat some tasks to help them with their learning.

We celebrate Homework completion in class with Class Dojos.

Reading

Phonics - Little Wandle

We use Little Wandle as or Phonics and reading programme.

Each week your child will read a phonetically decodable book when in school.  This book will be directly aligned to the phonics that they have secured during their lessons.  This same book will also be sent home on a Friday to be celebrated with you at home.  It should be a book which your child can read comfortably; they should know the words and they should be blending and reading it fluently to allow them to remain confident when reading.

Please listen to your child read this book to you and record it in their reading diary each time you read.

Please ensure these books are on site every day so that we can listen to your children read as often as possible and we shall change these for their next text on a Thursday evening.  It is essential that these books are returned every Thursday as they will be required for another group.

Reading for Pleasure

Each Friday, your child will have the option to choose a book from our class library.

This is a reading for pleasure book.  Your child will not be able to read this book independently and this should be read by you and enjoyed together. Please also write this in your reading diary too so that we can discuss the books that you are reading.

When your child returns this book on a Thursday, they will have the option to change it for another book for the next week.

Thank you for your continued support.
